This is Mrs. Rittscher's room. German I and II, English 10, Combo Lit, Yearbook, and Elementary German are taught in this room.

 

GERMAN I

This elective course (4 quarters) offers the opportunity to learn the language spoken by millions of people in several European countries. This course incorporates speaking, listening, writing, reading and cultural activities at a novice level with proficiency of the German language as its goal.

GERMAN II

German II is an elective with a pre-requisite of German I. This course has a three week review section and the class continues at a low intermediate level with proficiency as a goal.

ENGLISH 9

English 9 is a required course for all students entering the ninth grade. Course work includes, but is not inclusive of, vocabulary (includes roots, prefixes, & suffixes), literature (recognition and appreciation of various genre and mythology), writing (includes journalistic writing), and grammar (as deemed necessary).

 

English 10/Speech

English 10 is a required course. Students will spend the first semester preparing and presenting essays, speeches and debates. Students will incorporate learned organizational and presentational techniques. Students will spend the second semester reading and analyzing literature. Students will complete a growth portfolio.

ADVANCED SPEECH GRADES 11-12

This (elective) course will involve learning the history and techniques of theater and acting in preparation for the One Act competition in early winter. The course will also cover learning and basics of public speaking and the types of speeches in preparation for speech competition in the spring. This is mainly a performance class.

 

COMBINATION LITERATURE - GRADES 11 & 12

This course is offered in conjunction with Technical Writing in that it is an option to fulfill the graduation requirement of 4 year s of language arts. The first semester concentrates entirely on American authors and their pieces of literature while the second semester is devoted to British authors and works. It examines the pieces of literature from a historical viewpoint.

PSYCHOLOGY/SOCIOLOGY - GRADES 10-12

Psychology is a one semester course for juniors and seniors, to be taken in connection with the sociology class. The purpose of this class is to give the student an introduction to the study of psychology, which may be defined as a science of the mind and behavior. The student will study about the following with the desired outcome to have a better understanding of themselves and others: the life cycle, self and personality, abnormal behavior, mental health, and intelligence and creativity.

Sociology is a one semester course for juniors and seniors. To be taken in conjunction with and after the psychology class. The purpose of this class is to give the student an introduction to sociology, which may be defined as the science that deals with the investigation and analysis of human relationships, their causes and consequences. Students examine culture, cultural diversity, cultural conformity and adaptation, social structure, social inequality, systems of stratification, racial and ethnic relations, and social institutions.

Sophomores may take this course with the instructors' permission.

 

COMMUNICATIONS - GRADES 11-12

This elective course will help you understand the communication process as a whole. You will gain a better understanding of yourself as a communicator and of the ways you communicate with others. It will improve your public speaking abilities and help you become a better listener. It will also help you become a more effective participant in group discussions and meetings. It will include introductory ideas about performing in mass media, i.e. radio and television. It will also introduce you to the world of performing arts, i.e. storytelling, oral interpretation, and drama.
