This is a year long course. The students will study about adult living styles, love/infatuation, partner selection, marriage laws, what a successful marriage requires, planning for parenthood, signs and stages of pregnancy, birth process, trips to hospital and tour through the delivery room , needs of babies, needs of young children to one year old and two years of age, cost of having a child, planning the layette, furniture and other baby needs and pregnant mom needs. They will also study about planning NOT to have children and contraceptives and PID's and STD's. They will also learn about family crisis and life problems: abuse, rape, divorce, and possibly suicide, death and dying; finding help; budgeting, care of clothing and home, housing choices, and tenant-landlord laws, rent/lease forms and laws.
JUNIOR HIGH INDUSTRIAL ARTS / HOME ECONOMICS / ART- GRADE 7
7th GRADE INDUSTRIAL TECHNOLOGY: 7th Industrial Tech. will introduce 7th graders to different areas of our technological world. They will make drawings on computer using CAD software and also by using conventional drafting equipment. Students will be able to construct a project in woodworking using mass production techniques. Students will also study a unit dealing with transportation and the use of simple machines. They will then take part in a problem solving activity in which they will construct a transportation vehicle. (this class is 2nd semester)
7TH GRADE HOME EC. / ART: (1st semester) This class concentrates on food, nutrition, meal planning, equipment use and care, following a recipe, measuring, preparing breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Also covered is family conflict/violence, and stress for the family of a student.
For Art the students will do a project with food and concentrate n form/shape, color and texture or sculpture with "found" objects.
HOUSING & ENERGY: Includes why we choose styles of housing, what alternatives in housing are available, choosing backgrounds, room arrangement, window treatment, caring for the home (cleaning), and costs. Energy would include: how to save energy in the type and style of house, in the window types and coverings, psychology of color and furnishings related to warmth and coolness of rooms, hot water efficiency, use of electrical appliances and lighting types related to energy use. How this relates to conservation and environment and what we can do to help.
PARENTING- Includes parenting styles (democratic, autocratic, permissive), goals of parenting, basics of personality development, goals of children's behavior, the parent/child cycle, avoiding discouragement, encouraging children, responsibility and problem handling, discipline skills, avoiding communication blocks, active communication, and the family council. Application will be made to environment and conservation.
CONSUMERISM - This will involve making choices, how the consumer fits into the economy, consumers and quality of life, managing money -making a plan, credit, investing, risks, insurance and taxes, sharpening buying skills, using consumer information, assertiveness, rights and responsibilities, protection and assistance, and how we can conserve and help the environment. This will include new forms of product as well as packaging.
FOODS: Study of food preservation, exploring food choices (culture and customs) meal planning following guidelines for good nutrition, various appliances for cooking and how they work, types of materials used in cookware, measuring, reading recipes, cookery terminology, and kitchen arrangement.
Particular foods studied: meats, breads, fruits and vegetables, pastry (pies), egg dishes (egg used to thicken, bind or leaven), quiche, dairy foods (making homemade ice cream) and possibly holiday cookies and candies.
Study of cooking with various appliances: microwave, electric skillet, crock-pot & conventional oven.
CLOTHING: Will be mostly care and purchase unless the majority of the class would like to make a garment. Will include laundry and laundry products. They may choose to make a baby quilt or wall hanging instead of a garment (probably tied, not quilted) and it can be machine pieced or machine appliquéd.
