SOCIAL SCIENCES

WORLD GEOGRAPHY - GRADE 9

This is a year long required class for freshman. World Geography will examine all aspects of physical and cultural geography. This class will also examine the continents of the world, looking at the people, their history, political setup, and current day situations.

WORLD HISTORY - GRADE 10

This is a year long required class for sophomores. World History will analyze various aspects of the history of the world from early man through the present. Special emphasis will be placed on the relationships of the past and how they have affected and still affect the world today.

AMERICAN HISTORY - GRADE 11

A year long course for juniors. This class will examine the history of the United States. The course begins with exploration/discovery and traces political, social, and economical growth to contemporary times.

GOVERNMENT - GRADE 12

This is a year long class for seniors. In government, we will examine, in depth, the structure of federal, state, and local governments, and how they have built a solid foundation in the processes of government.

PSYCHOLOGY/SOCIOLOGY - GRADES 10-12

Psychology is a one semester course for juniors and seniors, to be taken in connection with the sociology class. The purpose of this class is to give the student an introduction to the study of psychology, which may be defined as a science of the mind and behavior. The student will study about the following with the desired outcome to have a better understanding of themselves and others: the life cycle, self and personality, abnormal behavior, mental health, and intelligence and creativity.

Sociology is a one semester course for juniors and seniors. To be taken in conjunction with and after the psychology class. The purpose of this class is to give the student an introduction to sociology, which may be defined as the science that deals with the investigation and analysis of human relationships, their causes and consequences. Students examine culture, cultural diversity, cultural conformity and adaptation, social structure, social inequality, systems of stratification, racial and ethnic relations, and social institutions.

Sophomores may take this course with the instructors' permission.

IN-DEPTH-HISTORY - GRADES 9-12

1st Quarter - 50's & 60's: Kennedy Assassination

2nd Quarter - Westward Expansion: Native Americans and Famous Individuals

3rd Quarter - Current Events

4th Quarter - World War II 1937-1945

In-Depth-History is one year elective course for all students entering 9-12 grades. This course is structured to offer an in-depth study of topics within the history field. Each subject matter will be one quarter in length. The subject matter for this year will be as listed above. This course will not be taught out of a textbook, but instead will use such materials as video tapes, newspapers, magazines, television (Nightline, 60 Minutes, etc.) and other reference materials.
