KEYBOARDING APPLICATIONS I - GRADE 9-12

The student reviews the keyboard using the touch method. After reviewing the initial keyboarding skills, students will format letters, reports, tables, term papers, and a variety of other types of problems. These skills can then be used for each student's own personal success in typing papers for other classes, quick accurate data entry in computer classes, other higher educational classes beyond the high school level, or perhaps some entry level employment.

The student will learn basic word processing, spreadsheet, and database concepts as they refine their keyboarding skills.

The use of the desktop business calculator will also be mastered--striving for at least 100 digits per minute.

KEYBOARDING APPLICATIONS II - GRADES 10-12

This class is designed to help students prepare for initial employment. It provides an intensive review and reinforcement of keyboarding skills in preparing copy from unarranged form; further develops speed and accuracy; and provides for the application of knowledge to production copy on manuscripts, letters, tabulations, and business forms.

This skill will then be applied to units on the dictaphone, desktop publishing, the calculator, composing business documents, speed and reinforce word processing concepts.

ACCOUNTING I - GRADES 11-12

Each student will gain a through knowledge of accounting principles that will enable them to use it for their own personal levels, or to enter the job market at the entry level. The entire accounting cycle of journalizing, posting, preparing financial statements, adjusting and closing entries will be covered with different types of business ownership.

The initial practice will be completed manually. The principles will then be applied using computer programs such as Peachtree Accounting, QuickBooks Pro, and Microsoft Excel.

ACCOUNTING II -GRADE 12

A detailed review of Accounting I is completed. Other accounting concepts that would normally be handled by an assistant accountant (not an accounting clerk) are covered.

Microcomputers are used to reinforce the concepts learned manually, and are an integral part of this class. Currently, peach tree accounting is the program used.

After successfully completing this class, each student will have a thorough knowledge of accounting that will enable them to enter the work force at the entry level and work up the career ladder, or to advance to higher educational levels.

SHORTHAND - GRADES 11-12

If enough interest is shown, this can be taught as an independent class or combined with Typing II or an office technology class. Shorthand theory will be covered the first semester and speed and accuracy in transcription will be the main concentration in the second semester. The purpose of the course is to develop a skill the student can use for their own personal note taking or as a basis for employment and/or continued education.

The demand for this skill is no longer as prevalent as it was in the past due to advanced technologies. The fact still remains, however, that the office worker who has shorthand may be hired before an office worker without shorthand.

EXPLORATORY II - GRADE 8

(Graded - A, B, C, D, & F Scale)

BUSINESS: (1st Semester) The students will continue to improve their keyboarding technique and speed to at least 40 wpm with acceptable accuracy. Their keyboarding skill is used to type short reports, personal notes, and other personal applications.

In cooperation with the Vocational Rehabilitation of Norfolk, career planning will continue. Units on the database, counting change, savings, banking, and auto insurance will be completed.

Also, the students will be introduced to spreadsheet software and complete a unit of money.

BUSINESS SYSTEM AND OFFICE TECHNOLOGY -GRADES 10-12

The main emphasis is on gaining skills and knowledge that con be transferred to today's electronic office upon initial employment. We review the operation of business machines such as the electronic calculator, duplicating and copying machines, dictaphone, typewriter, and microcomputer. Units on records management (filling), telecommunications (including the telephone), personal relations, mail information processing, and personal and career development (application forms, application letters, resumes, interviews) will be covered.

The skills learned in this class are implemented into actual job situations, whenever possible, by helping in the office, the business department, or other teachers.

Field trips to different offices will be arranged whenever feasible.
